The Adventures in Blackness and Belonging

Created by Multi-disciplinary Artist Michaela Ayers, BHS is a project that explores the concepts of Blackness and belonging in the context of Black American history and culture.

Like food, belonging is something that we all crave.

These themes animate her creative practice and motivate her approach to tell stories that challenge stereotypes while affirming the value of Black life. Given her background of as a DEI facilitator with an anti-racist lens, Michaela is dedicated to creating decolonized content that cultivates empowerment and uplifts our shared humanity.

Like a quilt, her work weaves together images, stories, and experiences that communicate the complexity of the Black experience from one generation to the next.
